Our Program
ASCE Infrastructure 2050 is a national initiative dedicated to transforming how we design and build civil infrastructure. Across bridges, tunnels, ports, roadways, aviation, and utility distribution systems, we bring together professionals from across the built environment to measure, manage, and significantly reduce embodied carbon emissions.
Understanding Embodied Carbon:
Embodied carbon encompasses the emissions generated throughout the complete lifecycle of infrastructure systems. This includes emissions produced during raw material extraction and manufacturing, as well as those generated during transport, initial construction, ongoing maintenance, repairs, and end-of-life demolition.
ASCE Affiliation:
Founded under the ASCE Committee on Sustainability, Infrastructure 2050 serves as the initiative informing actionable embodied carbon guidance, industry benchmarking, and technical standards. The initiative equips practitioners with the practical frameworks needed to make data-informed, environmentally conscious design choices.
Our History

-
2022 — Foundation: Co-founded under the ASCE Committee on Sustainability
-
2023 — Harmonize: Established a leadership role within the ECHO Project (Embodied Carbon Harmonization and Optimization) to unify industry data collection practices
-
2024 — Advocate: Advanced international outreach through presentations at United Nations Headquarters and participation as COP29 delegate
-
2025 — Integrate: Drafted updates to codes, standards, and guidance documents, including ASCE Standard 73 (Sustainable Infrastructure Standard), ACI 323 (Low-Carbon Concrete Code), and the ASCE Infrastructure 2050 Bridges Guidance Document, while formalizing dedicated initiative committees
-
2026 — Implement: Formally launched our national Signatory Program to empower infrastructure organizations and firms to commit to measurable carbon reduction targets
